Spain is one of my favorite countries. I love going there and spending some sunny and relaxed time. In fact, every time I´m there, I don´t even want to go home. I fell in love with Barcelona the first time I saw it. The Spanish Isles also have something magical and unique. The life is so different there. Mallorca is my favorite isle belonging to Spain. Unfortunately, for quite a long time it had been notoriously known for the wild German and English, partying there. Frankly, when my boyfriend suggested us going to Mallorca six years ago, I was very skeptic because of the above-mentioned reason. Though I decided to give it a try and we spent a lovely time in the North of the Isle. That time I understood that I would come again. Last summer we decided to spend our vacation there again. That time I wanted to stay in the capital city of Mallorca, Palma, to live in the city, to go shopping and do everything myself and feel as if I had been Spanish.
Living in Palma
I love finding cozy apartments via Airbnb in the place I want to stay. Till now we had only positive experiences with all our choices. One of the best apartments we got in Amsterdam for the New Year´s Eve (here). That time we booked a huge apartment in the center of Palma (five minutes’ walk to the Cathedral). If you imagine how a traditional apartment in Spain should look like, you would probably think about the apartment we were lucky to book. The Plaza Major is located in the direct center of the historical city. We could practically do everything just going out of the door. To me, it´s the ideal way to live somewhere.
Our apartment was on the third floor in a historical building in the middle of the square. Underneath 10 different restaurants had their summer terraces. At first, I was quite nervous because it was really loud outside. But in the evening, it turned out not to be a problem at all because most restaurants in Palma get closed at 10.30pm.
I have to admit that it was very difficult for me not to include hundreds of pictures of the apartment we lived in. To my liking, it was just perfect: high ceilings, real stone floor, classical wooden furniture and the Mediterranean spirit. There was nothing to wish more.
The city, long walks, kitchen
It doesn´t matter where you´re staying on Mallorca, you definitely should visit Palma. The city is incredibly beautiful. The inhabitants of Mallorca are very nice and polite and in the contrary to the Barcelonese, speak English pretty well. The Mediterranean Sea can be reached practically in the center of the city. Comparing to the sea in Barcelona, its color is much darker and more intense in Palma. The city is perfect for long walks. Though in the daytime Palma is very beautiful, I would recommend you take a walk when it gets dark. You´ll get a unique atmosphere walking through the ancient narrow streets. It will take you back in time as if using a time machine. At this time, I hardly could stop taking numerous pictures of the city motives. Of course, there are many museums in Palma as well but I just didn´t want to visit any because there are so many ways to see beautiful things outside enjoying the sun, the warmth, and the sea breeze.
Everyone who loves the Mediterranean kitchen will love Mallorca. Like in Barcelona, there is much fish, seafood, and everything is fresh just out of the sea. I ate at least one paella every day of our stay. The best way to wash it down is, of course, the traditional sangria. I miss it so much here in Germany. Though the kitchen in Barcelona and Palma are very similar, the meals on Mallorca are much smaller than in Barcelona.
The best way to discover the Isle is renting a car
Of course, there are many excursions you can choose on Mallorca. But many unique things can be found and reached only by car. We rented a car and used it every single day to reach the places we had planned to see. Renting a car is the best way to see the place you´re spending your vacation at because you can make a pause wherever you want and see what you want.
Being on Mallorca and not going to the beach would be very weird. So, we decided to spend one whole day on one of the numerous beaches of the island. Luckily, we got an insider tip from one Spanish guy who recommended us the beach Camp del Maar. When we arrived there we couldn´t be more thankful for this piece of advice. The beach was just perfect. It was big, clean, and not overcrowded. The water was so clean that I practically could see my toes standing in the water to the neck. The day we spent there was amazing.
The caves “cuevas dels Hams” in Porto Cristo
On the first day on Mallorca, we got a map with all locations and main attractions you can see there. When I saw that there were caves on Mallorca, I was pretty sure that I would go there. The caves “cuevas dels Hams” are approximately 1 hour away from Palma. The adult ticket is 21 EUR which is quite expensive but it´s worth it.
The excursion is about 1 hour long and in that time, you can see two separate caves. The water boilers are the real wonder of nature. The whole excursion is a great show with two movies depicting the discovery of the caves by Pedro Caldentey 1905 and the whole history of the world and mankind, showing the most famous pictures of different ages. The unique thing is that these films are shown directly on the rocks inside the caves. In the second cave filled with water, there is another spectacular show made with famous classical music parts. You can see it and many other impressions from Mallorca in my video on Youtube.
